Newport, located on the central Oregon coast, has been a favorite tourist destination since the 1860s. The small, succulent Yaquina Bay oyster made Newport world famous, and a popular destination for seafood lovers. Now commercially grown, visitors can buy the oysters and watch them being processed at the Oregon Oyster Company.

Other favorite Newport activities include visiting the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and the Yaquina Head Interpretive Center. Climb to the top of the 93 foot Yaquina Head Lighhouse, and see the spectacular view from Oregon's tallest lighthouse. In the Natural Area, visitors can find coastal sea birds such as cormorants, murres, and guillemonts, as well as harbor seals, sea lions and grey whales. The Natural Area's system of manmade ocean tidepools at Quarry Cove is an entertaining place to find tiny tide pool creatures, and is wheelchair accessible. The Interpretive Center has many different displays, from tidepool life to lighthouse life.

Numerous fishing charters are available to take visitors out for salmon and bottom fishing. Crabbing and clamming are also excellent in Yaqina Bay. Crab pots, clam shovels and guns and other equipment can be rented at local tackle shops. They will also offer tips on tides and techniques for a successful trip to the beach.

Bay Boulevard is a popular tourist area, where restaurants, galleries, shops, and attractions such as Ripley's Believe it or Not, the Waxworks Museum and the Undersea Gardens are side by side with working canneries and fish-packing plants. Visitors can also sign up for bay tours and whale watching tours on the bayfront. Crabbing trips are available, and many of the charter boats have facilities for cooking the crabs back at the docks, for an additional fee. Some lodging establishments have crab rings for rent, as well as crab cookers for guests to use. Parking can be hard to find, so it pays to go early, or visit during a walk around town.

Located on the central Oregon coast, Depoe Bay has become a favorite of coastal visitors for its unique tidal attractions and variety of eating and shopping opportunities. For several million years the Pacific Ocean has been carving its way through the tough basalt formations that form the sides of Depoe Bay, resulting in the smallest year-round navigable harbor in the world.
The picturesque bay is landlocked, except for the harbor entrance through the rocks, which can accommodate boats up to fifty feet in length. Visitors watch with excitement as the vessels make their way to and from the sea through the narrow channels leading under Highway 101 to the harbor, known locally as "shooting the hole." For those wishing to brave the seas themselves, there are numerous charter fishing and whale watching companies.
Depending on tidal conditions, visitors can watch and sometimes be drenched by the famous spouting horns that shoot geysers of salt water into the air, yards away from Highway 101. Depoe Bay is two hours from Portland, Oregon and the Portland International Airport.

The mighty Pacific Ocean greets the beach along 7 gorgeous miles in Lincoln City. The beauty and activities along the seashore change with the seasons, adding spice and variety. There are excellent locations for wave, whale, sunset and storm watching, and the beach is a treasure trove for collecting driftwood, agates, shells and floats. Large rocks emerging from the sea create perfect pockets for tide pooling during low tides, and beach hiking, surfing, windsurfing and fishing challenge adventure seekers. 15 public beach accesses welcome those who wish to indulge!

Devils Lake, deep only in terms of Indian folklore, is 1/3 mile wide, 3 miles long, and reaches a depth of only 22 feet. Nine species of freshwater fish beckon the fisherman, while water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing, knee-boarding and jet skiing engage other sports enthusiasts. Flowing from Devils Lake is the "D" River, which holds the title of the "World's Shortest River". From its source at Devils Lake, the river reaches its destination of the Pacific in a mere 120 feet.

Fly your own kite or watch the spectacular aerial displays of color and shape at the D River Wayside. Voted the "Kite Capital of the World", Lincoln City receives steady winds because of our unique location on the 45th parallel. Or, try all seven golf courses for a smorgasbord of birdies, bogies and eagles. For the weather enthusiast, one of the greatest Lincoln City thrills without the chills is watching a feisty coastal storm from a cozy perch. Turbulent seas and howling winds set the sand and your imagination swirling as you peer into the eye of the storm. Storm watching is best during the winter months.
